Passing on the Traditions is a project design to help
non-Caribbean and Caribbean children, of Midwest America, learn
about the cultural heritage of the Caribbean.
Our intent
is both to raise the awareness of the general public to the richness
and diversity of Caribbean cultures and to enhance the appreciation
of their own cultures in the offspring of Caribbean nationals living
in the Midwest.
The
program, aimed at building self-esteem in students/children of all
ages and nationality, is to encourage them to become more aware of
their rich cultures and to learn how their cultures have contributed
to the fabric of American history both past and present
The Students
will learn:
How the
Caribbean cultures that have richly contributed to the United States
Culture
Emphasis on
Math/Engineering- through the application of geometry to the design
and construction of costumes
Introducing
industrial crafts, such as working in metal, wood , plastics and
advanced fabrics to produce costumes
Geography –
different manifestation of the Caribbean culture throughout the
world
English
Language and Literature – through writing inspired by the Caribbean
culture
Citizenship
– approaching issues of diversity and community cohesion,
inter-generational understanding, and law and social order
